Receiving Qatar Oscar 100 satellite with SDR Console

Intro

After two months of traffic via the geostationary satellite Qatar Oscar 100, I propose this short article on my blog. Its objective is to detail what is required to install a reception line, which allows the reception of SSB, CW, SSTV … and also amateur television. The solution presented is a priori the most universal, widely used by stations and fairly cost-effective.

The solution consists in using a universal satellite TV receiver head with its satellite dish, as well as the SDR Console software developed by G4ELI. SDR Console includes a very interesting frequency stabilization feature that really competes with other more physical solutions.

This article is “multi-page”, to be browsed from one page to another or directly from the contents to the desired page.

    Merci

Hello and thank you for this great article that I will implement.

    One question is still pending:
what is the type of connector on the USB stick for DVB-T TV reception?
This is to order the right connection between the key and the T-Bias.

    Thank you

      Christian

Thank you Stéphane for your interest in my blog.
On the TNT key model in the photo, it must be a female MCX connector. I let you check, it could vary depending on the model.
There are adapters, such as this one: MCX male / F female plug or if you prefer MCX male / BNC female plug

Hoping to have answered, wishing a good assembly of the QO 100 receiving station!

  11. Bonjour,

Regarding the orientation of the dish, I can’t find the QO100 satellite in the links you indicate. But perhaps I can take a satellite positioned at 26° East (such as ARABSAT…).
    Thank you again

Materials used: dish 1.20m / universal LNB / 75 ohms cable / old coaxial directional coupler NARDA 3.7g 3.8g / old decoder / dongle gift from my friend CN8SSB / pc / sdr console software v3.0.12.
    Things changed:
    – I isolated T from the coupler to the ground of its chassis by removing a small nail and the received signal was on 700 MHz.
    – Using the sdr I led the signal to 10ghz as you said.
Remarks: I have to follow the frequency spectrum with the mouse wheel because the automatic AGC gain control of the console sdr does not work in this version.
Anyway, thank you dear friend and 73s QRO because you have gathered what I had on my head and the luggage that is in my shack.

  20. Bonjour Christian

      (Translation)
      Mustapha,

      Thank you for your feedback.
The AGC has nothing to do with the “Geostationnary Beacon” reception stabilization feature. Check that you have followed the explanations. On the banner, click on the button with “Start” circle. Click on the high tag that scrolls in the banner. Click on the button with the triangle “Enabled”. The stabilization is done, the BPSK beacon is then shifted to the 489,800 stack, and will remain there.

All this will only work properly with a PLL LNB. A DRO LNB will not work, because frequency jumps are too large to be adjusted by SDR Console.

      Patrice,

Everything’s set up right. All you have to do is indicate the reception frequency 10 489 750 000, to find the central BPSK beacon (or at least not far away). You place your mouse on the different numbers and click on the top of the number to increment, at the bottom of the number to decrement. Tip in passing, you can move your reception channel with the up-down and left-right arrows for a finer adjustment.
Good traffic and see you on the QO100 soon.

  26. Bsr Christian,
Autre solution ????
    Merci

    (Translation)
    Good evening, Christian,
Thanks for the tutos, EXCELLENT !!!
Question about SDR Console: during a qso where there are several stations it would be interesting to be able to use the RIT function to follow those who are not on the same frequency without changing its own transmission frequency, here if I use the RIT function (above the XIT function) I lose the synchronization of the beacon (visible on the Geo Sat Beacon screen). This RIT function may not be intended for this ???? Other solution ?????
    Thank you
    73
    Jacques F6BKI

    1. Jacques,

      73, Christian

      (Translation)
      Jacques,

Indeed, the RIT cannot be used when using the stabilization function, as you have well noticed.
To tune according to the station, I use the left and right arrows on the keyboard to adjust the reception. It also works with the mouse wheel to change the reception frequency.
There is the elegant possibility to connect a compatible midi controller to have an external VFO button and other shortcut keys https://www.sdr-radio.com/midi-controllers.
There is also the possibility to hijack a mouse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbAqRwORsb0
Last solution to have a VFO knob is to divert an audio volume control knob to be reprogrammed: https://hackaday.com/2019/12/12/software-defined-radio-gets-physical-control/
I am waiting for the material and will test this last solution soon. Perhaps this could be the subject of a detailed article.

In addition, it is obvious but I remind you that you should not activate the frequency synchronization (Sync RX) because otherwise, you change the transmission frequency every time you see that you rebook on reception, and would thus contribute to the complexity of multi-station QSO.

To complete the set, if you like, SDR Console can be controlled by a PTT pedal : https://www.sdr-radio.com/ptt

      73, Christian

        73 Jacques F6BKI

        (Translation)
Good evening Christian, thank you for the detailed answer.
Another subject: on the ”transmit” part at the bottom there is a ”Monitor” tab, you can for example check the RX box, put the slider half right and listen to your own LF signal, it’s very useful to adjust the levels and the TX equalizer. For some time I have noticed here that the BF signal listened to was “granular”, do you have this problem ? I use a USB headset. Lucien F1TE notes the same phenomenon.
        73 Jacques F6BKI

          73 Christian

          (Translation)
Yes, the monitoring and its oscilloscope are useful to check what is being sent, in level and spectral richness. I have not noticed this effect. I use the reception equalizer and the pseudo-stereo function. The audio can also be altered by too much noise reducer.
          I currently use headphones Jabra Evolve2 40

    merci d’avance F6LIA Victor

Good evening to all, at the club we have installed sdr console, Pluto sdr updated with the f5oeo software, on 3 different PCs in win 7 full 32bits, the software starts correctly, we decode the reception, we are synchronized on the BPSK beacon, and after 2 or 3 minutes the software stops purely and simply, if we restart it, it starts again normally 1,2, or 3 minutes and stops. It does this on all 3 PCs.
    Does anybody have this problem.
Thank you in advance F6LIA Victor

    1. Victor,

      73 Christian

      (Translation)
      Victor,
Never seen that here. I assume you operated over a LAN? Check the network, its stability. Avoid connecting it in wifi 2.4GHz (which would be disturbed if you switch to transmission). Have you tested with a USB connection?
      73 Christian

    Merci d’avance

    (Translation)
Thank you Christian for your answer.
No, we only use USB instead. Another OM from the club plugged our USB into his PC and it worked without any problem.
For the moment the only difference is that his laptop is on Win 10 with 16GB of memory and a quad core processor. On our side we only have Win 7 on more rudimentary PCs with 2 to 3 GB of memory.
So is there a recommended PC equipment and which system can we use?
Is there a linux version that may be less resource intensive?
    Thank you in advance

  29. Bonsoir,

Without a sample, it is difficult to help you…
I invite you to check the characteristics of your signal in stages, and the VHF stage at first (audio dyamics, spectral width, power level, frequency stability…)
